After watching the new Netflix’s movie, The Silence (2019), based on a book of the same name by Tim Lebbon (published in 2015.) The movie, directed by John R. Leonetti and starring Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, Miranda Otto, and John Corbett. Yes, it is about a family, including a young girl who is deaf, doing their best to defend themselves against an invasion of some ancient, bat-like predators known as Vesps from a freshly uncovered underground cave system who attack using sound.
The movie starts right as the invasion starts and this family sets off on a journey, trying to find a safe place to hide. That’s also the point, though. On the way, they met a crazy cult, losing a dog and a friend as well as Grandma along the way.
Review
I noticed one issue with the movie; it’s clearly showed that the deaf girl is in some way more satisfying at living in this new deadly world because she is deaf. She can make an unaware sound without her knowing the problem she might be creating for the rest of the family. I think the story should have talked about the struggles the deaf daughter had to rise above in order to survive.
The Vesps used in the movie don’t appear to make use of echo location, why weren’t they crashing into trees? This though doesn’t make the movie a bad one, the acting was on point, the calm performance of the cult group. Even so, I would have enjoyed the movie well had it not been the issues I just stated above.
