The 2026 World Cup semifinal match went goalless at half time. Anthony Gordon of the Three Lions netted a goal 10 minutes at the start of the second half, with an assist coming from Morgan Rogers. In the 85th minute, Lionel Messi gave an assist to Enzo Fernandez who equalized for the Argentines. Lautaro Martinez additional minute header gave the Argentines the maximum points to secure the final stage of the competition. Argentine players held up a banner depicting ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’, which means the Falklands are Argentine at the end of the game. In 2014, Argentina was fined $27,000 for displaying a similar banner.
FIFA described the incident had breached rules on political action and team misconduct. The football governing body did not reply swiftly for a comment request. There has been a statement from Peter Kyle (British business minister) requesting that the incident must be investigated adding that the World Cup must be distinct from politics.
“I’m really proud of our team … the dignity that they showed, and that was in real contrast to what we saw with the Argentine team last night,” ……“I really do hope that FIFA do a proper investigation into it.”
Details of the Banner Incident
The source of the banner found on the pitch is unknown, as Lisandro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso were seen holding upnthe banner and waving to the Argentine fans in the stands.
